Keeping Up with Cadillac 1930's V-12 Engine Set 1933 Pierce Arrow V-12 Engine 1937 Lincoln V-12 Engine Rivals Answer to Cadillac's V-16 Even though Cadillac lost money on every V-16 car they made and demand for them was low, their rivals like Lincoln and Pierce Arrow had to come up with something competitive. Both decided on massive V-12 engines that were more economical and efficient than Cadillac's V-16 but powerful enough for heir heavy luxury cars. The Pierce Arrow V-12 was improved from 130 to 175 horsepower by race car drive Ab Jenkins. He then drove one at the Bonneville Salt Flats and broke 14 international records driving an incredible 2710 miles in 24 hours. This 426 cubic inch L-head engine featured overhead valves, less than 6:00 to 1 compression and didn’t need anti-knock fuel. Lincoln made two versions of their V-12, a smaller one for the lower priced Zephyr and this version for their larger cars. At 414 cubic inches it produced 150 horsepower and featured a Stromberg 2-barrel carburetor.
