The Pride of Pennsylvania1918 York-Hoover AmbulanceMaking What Ford Would Not
Two York, Pennsylvania manufacturers combined with Ford to create this ambulance. The York Wagon Company was established in 1892 and by the early 1910's was providing parts, gears and sub-assemblies to local auto makers. George W. Hoover and Sons was a York carriage builder who had begun to specialize in funeral and other service vehicles. Ford had made their own trucks early on but in 1913 decided to only sell chassis. The Ford TT chassis, powered by their dependable 4-liter engine, was Hoover's most-popular and least-expensive model. This Kings County Hospital Ambulance illustrates what Hoover and Sons did using their coach building skills combined with Ford's chassis and York's parts. By 1928 York and Hoover had merged into the York-Hoover Body Company.
