The great N.Y. to Paris race in 1908 was a chance to settle this question. Europe provided 5 cars but the only American company to take up the gauntlet was Thomas. Never a big seller or well-known out of the Northeast (it was made in Buffalo, NY), the Flyer was given little chance. But 5 1 1/2 months after the 6 cars started in Times Square, the Flyer rolled into Paris covering 3,000 miles more than the German Protos and finishing 2 months ahead of the Italian Zust. All 3 French cars did not finish. America could now claim the mantle as the producer of the best cars of the day.
