1907 Thomas Flyer
Winner of the Great Race1907 Thomas FlyerShowed the World U.S. Automotive Supremacy
In the early years of the 20th Century, before Ford had developed his assembly line, many countries proclaimed that their cars were the best. The great N.Y. to Paris race in 1908 was a chance to settle this question. Europe provided 5 cars but the only American company to take up the gauntlet was Thomas. Never a big seller or well-known out of the Northeast (it was made in Buffalo, NY), the Flyer was given little chance. But 5 1 1/2 months after the 6 cars started in Times Square, the Flyer rolled into Paris covering 3,000 miles more than the German Protos and finishing 2 months ahead of the Italian Zust. All 3 French cars did not finish. America could now claim the mantle as the producer of the best cars of the day.
