Last Great Pillared Sedan
1951 Ford™ Custom Crestliner

Last of the Crestliners
It only lasted two years. But with its sharp 2-tone factory-baked enamel finish, vinyl roof and standard 100hp V-8 engine, the Crestliner was Ford's sportiest model during the early 1950’s. Sales, unfortunately, were never up to expectations with only 17,000 sold in 1950 and less than 9,000 in 1951. The reason, of course, was that both Chevrolet and Chrysler beat Ford into developing a true pillerless hardtop. By late 1951 Ford had caught up with the introduction of the Victoria. Despite costing 20% more than the Crestliner it outsold it 12-1. Seeing the public’s response, for 1952 Ford made Crestline a series that included the Victoria, Sunliner convertible and Country Squire wagon.

The Birth of a Mechanical Miracle
1957 Ford™ Skyliner

Worlds Only Hide-Away Hardtop
Others had made experimental versions. Ford had even considered it for the Lincoln 5 years earlier. But the 1957 Ford Skyliner was the first real production retractable hardtop convertible. Using 5 motors, 13 switches and 600 feet of wire, this mechanical miracle worked perfectly. To get it right, Ford didnt introduce this V-8 powered marvel until spring of 1957, but still sold 20,766 in 5 months, including the first one which was presented to President Eisenhower. Part of an extensive $246 million new styling renovation (that included what Ford called high-cantered fenders and we all called fins), the Skyliner helped Ford regain the #1 sales spot from Chevrolet and put the innovative spotlight back in Dearborn.

Lifeguard Design Emphasizes Safety
1956 Ford Fairlane Crown Victoria

All That Glitters Is… Chrome
Ford executives were puzzled and unhappy in 1956. The 1955 restyling was well received and their entire line was voted Motor Trends Car of the Year for 1956. But Chevrolet still topped them in sales by over 150,000. To combat this Ford did two things. First they upped the horsepower in all their engines. Secondly, they emphasized safety with the Lifeguard Design features like padded dashboards and recessed steering wheels. The Fairlane Crown Victoria cost $2337 with the 6-cylinder engine and, in total, 9209 were made. They had so much trim one critic said, "All that glitters is not gold, it's chrome".

Scoops and Honey
1958 Ford Fairlane 500 Sunliner

It Was the Best of Times; It Was the Worst of Times
1958 was a rollercoaster year for the Ford Motor Company. Sales were down 35% due to the recession and Ford lost money the first 3 quarters of the year. But the new 4-seat Thunderbird was Motor Trend's Car of the Year. On the downside, the new Edsel was, to put it mildly, an ice-cream colored bomb. For the regular Ford line, 1958 was a year of complete restyling. The grille was a honeycomb design with simulated air scoop on the hood. This sculptured look was repeated on the rear deck. New Cruise-O-Matic transmission had higher torque which was needed for the new big block V-8 engines. The Fairlane 500 Sunliner added dual headlights and sweeping beltline molding for a more futuristic look. 35,029 Sunliners were produced with the V-8 version like our precision die-cast replica costing $2749.
