World's Newest Engine for the World's Finest Car
1949 Cadillac Series 62 Club Coupe

Tested Over One Million Miles
Cadillac did not take replacing its revered L-head engine lightly. Work on the new OHV V-8 started in 1936 and, one million test miles later, it was ready for the 1949 line. Smaller and 188 lbs. lighter than the L-head, the 331 cubic inch V-8 provided 10 more horsepower (now 160) and 20% more miles per gallon. No wonder sales increased 76% from 1948 to a new Cadillac record of over 92,000 cars sold. The Series 62 Club Coupe, at $2966, was the least expensive of this series. It had all the features that had their ad campaign claiming the 1949's were the most beautiful Cadillacs ever made.

Car-of-the-Future Styling
1957 Cadillac Series 62 Convertible Coupe

Dagmars Lead the Way
In the mid-1950's one of the first late-night TV stars was a statuesque busty blond named Dagmar. Part of Cadillac's Car-of-the-Future styling was rubber-tipped bumper guards which, for obvious reasons, became known as Dagmars. Other more important changes included the tubular x-frame chassis, which gave greater structural rigidity and a lower body line, hooded headlights and circular parking lights.

Beginning of the Fins

1957 started Cadillac's 3 year love affair with rear fins that culminated in 1959. The Series 62 Convertible Coupe cost $5225 and 9,000 were made. Standard equipment included Hydra-Matic drive and power steering, brakes, windows and seats. Nothing pointed to success in 1957 more than driving one of these 300 horsepower Cadillacs.
