Still Dominating the Prestige Market
In 1930 Packard still dominated the luxury car market with over 50% of the sales. But the Depression had cut sales 40% from 1929 with worse to come. Although Packard offered their expensive Speedster series (the Boattail sold for $5200, more than most houses), they did nothing to promote it and only 113 were sold of the five styles. Today the Boattail version is the most remembered and valued. A mint-condition version, like our replica, would sell for over $250,000.

By 1935 Duesenbergs reputation for big, fast, beautiful and expensive cars was already well established. "It's a Duesy" was the catchphrase for anything extraordinary. The Model J, developed in 1928 has been called the single best American car ever made. Ab Jenkins broke the world record with a supercharged SSJ in 1935 at the Bonneville Salt Flats. Only two of these Roadsters were ever made (at a cost of $9500 just for the chassis no wonder)-one for Clark Gable and the other for Gary Cooper.
